Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines to balance their risk, while this market relies on individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook's odds are inaccurate, they can express that view by trading in this market, driving the price towards their perceived fair value. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially when unique information or insights are available to market participants.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe an outcome is likely, the higher the price of its corresponding shares will rise, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event's probability.
