Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, aiming to balance action on both sides of a bet and ensure profitability. This market, however, allows anyone to express their beliefs, potentially leading to odds that incorporate information not fully captured by traditional bookmakers. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources, biases, or simply a wider range of perspectives influencing the price.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a growing expectation of its likelihood. Conversely, selling pressure drives prices down. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds constantly adapt to new information and changing sentiment.
