Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds to ensure profitability, while this market allows traders to directly assess probabilities. If a significant discrepancy exists between the implied probability on Polymarket and sportsbook odds, it could indicate differing opinions on the likely outcome. This difference may stem from unique information considered by prediction market participants or simply a divergence in risk assessment. It's always valuable to compare both to form a well-rounded view.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the market's implied probability. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more shares purchased for a particular outcome, the higher its price will climb, indicating increased confidence. Conversely, selling shares drives the price down, suggesting decreasing belief. This dynamic pricing ensures the market remains responsive to new information and changing perceptions.
