Frequently, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. This can be due to the wisdom of the crowd effect, where the collective predictions of many individuals can be more accurate than those of a few experts. While sportsbooks set odds based on their own models and risk assessment, this market allows anyone to participate and express their belief about the likely winner. Discrepancies between prediction market prices and sportsbook odds can present opportunities for arbitrage, though such opportunities are often short-lived.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific outcome, the price of those shares increases, reflecting a higher perceived likelihood of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share can be interpreted as the market’s estimated probability of that outcome being true. The market dynamically adjusts as new information becomes available and traders update their beliefs.
