Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome. Discrepancies can arise from differing information, biases, or simply the collective intelligence of prediction market participants. Examining these differences can be insightful, as prediction markets have sometimes demonstrated superior forecasting ability compared to conventional odds, especially in events with complex factors at play.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price indicates the market's expectation, and changes in price signal shifts in sentiment. The more shares purchased for a particular outcome, the higher its price will climb, and vice versa.
