Generally, prediction market odds tend to reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often aligning closely with, but sometimes diverging from, traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own analysis and to balance action, while this market is driven by traders who are incentivized to accurately predict the outcome. If there’s a significant difference, it could indicate that prediction market participants have access to information or insights not yet fully incorporated by sportsbooks, or vice versa. It’s important to compare both to form a well-rounded view.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more people trade, the price adjusts to reflect the collective prediction. Higher demand for shares in a particular outcome will drive up its price, indicating a greater perceived chance of success, while lower demand will decrease the price. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date information.
