Generally, prediction market odds tend to reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, often proving more accurate than traditional sportsbook odds. This is because prediction markets incentivize participants to research and accurately assess probabilities. While sportsbooks may incorporate biases or seek to profit from public perception, this market relies on individuals directly expressing their beliefs through trades. However, discrepancies can occur due to differing liquidity and the specific expertise of each group. It’s common to see initial differences that narrow as the event approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing different exact scores. The price of each share reflects the market’s current assessment of the probability of that score occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the prices adjust accordingly. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds closely align with the collective intelligence of the participants. The market’s efficiency is driven by the incentive for traders to profit from accurate predictions.
