Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and ensure profit, while this market aggregates the wisdom of the crowd. This can lead to discrepancies, especially when there’s strong public sentiment or inside information not yet factored into sportsbook lines. It’s common to see this market move independently of sportsbook odds, offering potentially valuable insights for informed bettors. Comparing the two can reveal where the crowd believes there's an edge, or where the sportsbook may be mispricing the probability of an outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of each exact score. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more people trade, the price adjusts to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. Higher demand for a particular outcome will drive its price up, while increased selling pressure will lower it. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market constantly reflects the most up-to-date predictions.
