Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbook odds are typically set by a small team of experts, while this market aggregates opinions from many individuals. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or risk assessments. It's common to see prediction markets move independently of sportsbook lines, especially as new information becomes available or as the event draws closer. Comparing the two can be a useful exercise for informed decision-making.
On Kalshi, this market is priced through a continuous order book where traders buy and sell contracts representing each outcome. The price of a contract indicates the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. As more people buy contracts for a particular team, the price increases, reflecting a higher perceived chance of victory. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price reflects the collective assessment of all traders on the platform, constantly adjusting based on supply and demand. This dynamic pricing mechanism aims to provide a real-time probability estimate.
