Prediction market odds, like those found in this market, often differ from traditional sportsbook odds due to the mechanisms by which they are determined. Sportsbooks set lines to balance their risk and ensure profit, while prediction markets rely on the collective intelligence of traders who are incentivized to accurately forecast the outcome. This can lead to prediction markets being more efficient in their pricing, particularly as more information becomes available. However, sportsbooks may offer different types of wagers not available here, and may have different margins.
Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Different platforms attract different types of traders with varying levels of information and risk tolerance. Polymarket and Kalshi also have distinct fee structures and liquidity profiles, which can influence pricing. Furthermore, the specific markets offered on each platform—for example, Spread: Brown (-14.5) versus Yale wins—can lead to discrepancies even when addressing the same underlying event. These factors contribute to the observed price variations in this market, offering opportunities for arbitrage.
