Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade based on their own insights. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook has mispriced a team's chances, the odds on Polymarket will adjust accordingly. This can lead to prediction markets being more accurate than sportsbooks, especially as the event approaches and more information becomes available. It’s a fascinating comparison of different forecasting methods.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the prices will fluctuate, providing a dynamic assessment of the likelihood of either Bristol City or Sheffield United scoring first. The market’s efficiency is driven by the collective intelligence of those trading shares.
