Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market incorporates a broader range of information and opinions from traders. If sportsbook odds suggest a clear favorite, this market may show a more nuanced view, particularly if there's significant uncertainty or disagreement among traders. Discrepancies can arise due to differing risk assessments and the incentives of participants in each venue. It’s common to see prediction markets outperform traditional forecasts over time.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined entirely by supply and demand, with traders adjusting their positions based on new information and their own analysis of the event. This creates a dynamic and responsive pricing system.
