Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs, potentially leading to more accurate probabilities as new information emerges. Discrepancies can arise due to differing levels of information, biases, or simply varying opinions among participants. It’s common to see prediction markets react more quickly to breaking news or unexpected developments than sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous exchange where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of each share fluctuates based on supply and demand, reflecting the collective prediction of the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, indicating a higher perceived probability. Conversely, selling pressure drives the price down. This dynamic pricing mechanism ensures that the market odds are constantly updated to reflect the latest information and sentiment.
