Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market incorporates a wider range of information and perspectives. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially when subjective factors or less-publicized information are considered relevant to the outcome. Analyzing these differences can offer valuable insights into public perception and potential value opportunities.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe a particular outcome will happen, the higher the share price will rise, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event's likelihood.
