Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on their own models and incorporate a profit margin, while this market relies on the collective wisdom of traders. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply varying interpretations of the players’ strengths and weaknesses. If significant differences exist, opportunities for arbitrage may emerge, where traders can profit by exploiting the price difference between the two venues. It’s important to note that prediction markets can sometimes offer more accurate forecasts, especially when a large and informed trading volume exists.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting a growing expectation of its likelihood. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand; there are no external factors influencing the pricing process. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective intelligence of the traders.
