Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market relies on the collective predictions of informed traders. This can lead to discrepancies, particularly when there's strong public sentiment or inside information not yet factored into sportsbook lines. It's common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information, offering a potentially more accurate assessment of probabilities as the event approaches. Keep in mind that these are distinct sources of information.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current top outcome, as indicated by share price, is the one with the highest implied probability. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the aggregated intelligence of all participants. The market’s volume indicates the level of interest and confidence in the various outcomes.
