Prediction market odds often reflect a different kind of wisdom than those found at sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market represents the collective forecast of informed traders. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or when new information emerges. Often, prediction markets can be more accurate than traditional polls or analyst predictions, as they incentivize participants to express their true beliefs. Examining these differences can offer valuable insights into the perceived probabilities of various outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived likelihood. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price dynamically adjusts based on supply and demand, providing a real-time assessment of expectations. This creates a fluid and responsive pricing system driven by the collective intelligence of the traders.
