Prediction market odds often differ from traditional sportsbook odds due to the wisdom of the crowd and the incentive structure. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and ensure profit, while this market allows participants to directly express their beliefs. If prediction market odds significantly diverge from sportsbook lines, it may indicate disagreement about the true probability of an outcome. It's common to see discrepancies, especially before major events, as new information emerges and market participants adjust their forecasts. This market provides a unique perspective compared to traditional betting venues.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in an outcome. The price of a share reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts accordingly, providing a dynamic assessment of the event's likelihood. The current price reflects the collective intelligence of those trading on the platform, offering a different perspective than traditional odds-making.
