Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to participate and express their beliefs. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before a significant amount of trading occurs. Observing these differences can be insightful, as the market may identify information not yet fully priced into sportsbook lines. Comparing the two can help inform your own assessment of the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This means that as more people believe an outcome is likely, the price of shares representing that outcome will increase, and vice versa. The market dynamically adjusts to new information and changing sentiment, providing a real-time assessment of the event's probabilities.
