Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. This market, however, is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs, potentially leading to more accurate probabilities, especially as the event approaches and more information is factored in. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information access, biases, or simply the dynamic nature of a decentralized market versus a centralized bookmaker.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. Higher demand for shares in a particular outcome drives up its price, indicating a greater perceived likelihood, while increased selling pressure lowers the price. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date information and sentiment.
