Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while this market allows participants to directly bet against each other. As a result, prediction market odds can sometimes be more efficient, representing a more accurate assessment of the true probabilities. However, sportsbook odds can be influenced by factors like public betting patterns and promotional offers, which may not be fully reflected in this market. It's useful to compare both to form a well-rounded view.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more shares purchased for a particular outcome, the higher its price rises, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds constantly adjust to incorporate new information and changing sentiment among participants. The current implied probabilities are determined solely by the trading activity on Polymarket.
