Prediction market odds, like those found on Polymarket and Kalshi, often differ from traditional sportsbook odds due to the underlying mechanisms. Sportsbooks set odds to maximize profit, incorporating a margin, while prediction markets are driven by the collective wisdom of traders who are incentivized to accurately forecast the outcome. This market’s price reflects the aggregated beliefs of participants, potentially revealing information not fully captured by sportsbooks. Furthermore, prediction markets often have lower transaction costs and allow for more nuanced trading strategies than traditional betting, influencing the observed price differences.
Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Prices on Polymarket and Kalshi may differ for several reasons. Each platform has its own user base, trading rules, and liquidity levels, all of which can impact price discovery. Polymarket currently favors Spread: Barcelona (-3.5) at 99, while Kalshi leans toward Valencia Basket wins at n/a. These discrepancies can also arise from differing interpretations of available information or varying levels of risk aversion among traders on each platform. The volume traded on each platform also plays a role; higher volume generally leads to tighter spreads and more efficient pricing.
