Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbook odds are typically set by professional oddsmakers, while this market is driven by individual traders. It's common to see discrepancies between the two, particularly before significant events or when new information emerges. These differences can arise from varying levels of information access, differing risk assessments, or simply the influence of public opinion on the prediction market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe a particular outcome is likely, the higher the price of its corresponding shares will climb, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing reflects the evolving expectations of the crowd.
