Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to profit from margins, while this market allows participants to directly express their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is undervaluing a particular outcome, the prediction market odds will adjust accordingly. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the collective intelligence of market participants. It's common to see the market odds shift as new information becomes available and the event approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each possible outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the prices dynamically adjust, reflecting the evolving consensus. The market's efficiency stems from the incentive for traders to accurately assess probabilities, as profitable trades are rewarded.
