Prediction markets and sportsbooks price outcomes differently because they operate under distinct incentive structures. Sportsbooks set odds to balance liability and extract margin; prediction markets aggregate trader beliefs through continuous price discovery. Prediction market odds often reflect longer-term conviction and less frequent adjustment, while sportsbooks react quickly to sharp action and public betting patterns. Comparing the two reveals whether professional traders and casual bettors see the same edge.
Multiple platforms trading the same event can show price divergence due to different user bases, liquidity depths, and fee structures. Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Kalshi's specific rules, order-matching mechanics, and trader demographics may cause its pricing to lag or lead other venues. Arbitrage opportunities emerge when one platform prices Argentina or Switzerland significantly higher or lower than consensus, though transaction costs and withdrawal delays often prevent perfect alignment across exchanges.
Team news—injuries, lineup changes, or tactical shifts—typically drives significant repricing in this market. Recent form, head-to-head history, and player availability updates can shift trader conviction sharply. Weather conditions, venue factors, and pre-match commentary from analysts may also influence positions. Late-breaking developments hours before kickoff often trigger the largest price swings as traders reassess probabilities and adjust their stakes accordingly.
