Prediction market odds often reflect a different set of information and incentives than traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin, while prediction markets aim to represent the true probability of an event occurring as assessed by traders. This can lead to differences, especially when there’s significant public interest or disagreement about the likely outcome. It’s common to find that prediction markets are more efficient at incorporating new information quickly, as traders are directly incentivized to accurately forecast the result of this market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice-versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price reflects the aggregated sentiment of all participants, making it a dynamic and responsive indicator of expectations for the Antwerp vs. Falco basketball game.
