Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If a significant number of informed bettors believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, they can express that view through trading activity, causing the prediction market odds to diverge. It’s common to see differences, especially before a lot of money has been wagered on either side.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective intelligence of the market. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This means that the market price isn’t determined by a central authority but emerges from the interactions of many individuals, potentially leading to a more accurate forecast than traditional methods.
