Prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If there’s a significant discrepancy, it might indicate that the crowd believes the sportsbook is mispricing the probability of a particular outcome. It’s also possible that information not yet fully incorporated into sportsbook lines is already reflected in the prediction market. Examining these differences can offer valuable insights.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective forecast. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now.
