Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks set initial odds based on their own analysis, while this market’s prices are determined by individuals trading based on their own insights and information. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts. Comparing the two can be a useful exercise to identify potential value or mispricing, but remember that each represents a different form of forecasting.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief about the outcome of the Rochester Americans versus Hamilton Bulldogs game. As more shares are bought for a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share represents the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust expectations.
