Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a ‘wisdom of the crowd’ effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the dynamics of each venue. It’s common to see prediction markets offer more nuanced probabilities, especially for less conventional outcomes, compared to the more limited options typically available at sportsbooks. Examining these differences can reveal interesting insights into public perception.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of each exact score. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome. As more traders participate, the prices adjust to reflect the collective assessment of the event’s likelihood. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s depth and volume indicate the level of confidence traders have in their predictions. Observing the order book can provide further insight into the forces driving price movements.
